It was a great night in Chattanooga where Atlanta United FC fans were treated to a taste of what the upcoming MLS season has to offer. With two goals in the first half and two in the second, ATL UTD coasted to a comfortable 4 – 0 win over Chattanooga FC. It was a refreshing site as ATL UTD looked like a team on another level. The second goal of the game was an early contender for goal of the season as newly appointed number 11, Yamil Asad, slotted his second goal of the match into the side netting from the left corner of the box. The 22 year old Argentine showed great poise and versatility for a debut for Atlanta. Among the other goal scorers were number 7, Josef Martinez, who headed in a low cross from the right corner, and Atlanta native, Andrew Carleton (#30) who impressed with his work rate and footwork.
Atlanta showed great poise in the back four, moving the ball around confidently while keeping the clean sheet. Irishman, Chris McCann (#16) impressed in the central defensive midfield position, as he controlled possession and moved the ball like a veteran in the first half. Having him in front of the back four distributing the ball around looks like a promising situation. Manager, Tata, experimented with the squad, giving almost every player a shot at some point, which made it very exciting for the traveling fans.
To top off the wonderful experience that was ATL UTD’s first pre-season match, they unveiled the new second kit for the first time, which might have been the highlight of the night. The initial red and gold kit is stunning enough, but, this new all grey and off red kit stole the show.
All in all it was a great first match for the newest MLS expansion side and all the traveling fans. Next stop Charleston!
